Ch2: device research

  • What is considered science and what is considered engineering varies in different countries and cultures.
As a typical example, I consider electronic`device research’. In various fields it appears that device research is housed within physics departments in the UK, but in electrical engineering or materials departments in the USA. For instance the field of optoelectronics is housed by dedicated physics research groups in Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, Warwick in the UK, but by engineering in MIT, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth in the USA. This may reflect the different funding options for application based research between the two countries, as well as the availability of commercial partners to co-fund research development.
It is hard to acquire hard data for this.
